EXPLORING ST. JOHN: A Memoir of Sunshine, Snorkeling & New Beginnings
Embarking on a trip to St. John offers more than just pristine beaches and clear blue waters. It's a Caribbean destination filled with unexpected moments, new discoveries, and refreshing perspectives.
Read on as I recount my recent sojourn to this tropical paradise, where I sought to savor every experience — from snorkelling among vibrant marine life to embracing the warmth of the local culture.
Day One: The Adventure Begins
Starting off on the right foot, my plane touched down early and allowed me time to indulge in that much-needed rum shot.
Stepping out into the island's tropical air was like a warm hug after a long day. A quick taxi ride transported me to the glamorous Ritz-Carlton Hotel in St. Thomas for a site visit.
(As I reflect on my teaching career, and the new path I'm pursuing as a travel advisor, I'm filled with excitement and the thrill of this life chapter unfolding.)
Meeting with the team at the Ritz-Carlton was an opportunity to explore the property and see the post-Irma updates. Though the style might not be my personal preference, I can envision its appeal for families and those who seek catered experiences.
After a comprehensive tour and a delightful lunch with the sales team, I set off to catch the ferry to St. John.
Day Two: Hiking, Heat, and Beach Bliss
Embracing the day's early hours, I set out for a hike to Honeymoon Bay and discovered my true feelings about hiking… It’s not my cup of tea! Yet, the stunning views and serenity of Peace Hill were worth the effort. The island's heatwave was in full swing, a testament to the weather's unpredictability. Taking refuge at Honeymoon Bay, I basked in the crystal-clear waters, reminiscing about past trips and relishing the present moments.
Day Three: Beaches, Sunsets, and Unplanned Adventures
Another morning, another beach. I ventured to Hawksnest and Maho Bay, enjoying the serenity and beauty each spot offered. The lure of Gibney Beach pulled at my heartstrings, but alas, it was full. However, the day was far from a disappointment as I found solace in Mermaid’s Chair and shared laughs with fellow beachgoers. As the day transitioned to evening, the allure of a sunset sail was too hard to resist, and I found myself enchanted by the melodious tunes of Erin Hart under the colorful sky.
Day Four: Embracing New Experiences and Familiar Favorites
A new day brought new opportunities to explore. The rush of memories while strolling through Mongoose Junction reminded me of the myriad emotions and experiences I've had in this place. Dining at La Tapa provided a moment of culinary delight, as well as reflection on portion sizes and the evolving dining scene.
Day Five: A Quest for the Perfect Beach
With my friend by my side, we embarked on a quest for the perfect beach. Gibney was our first choice, but fate had other plans. Trunk Bay and Maho Bay provided their unique charm and seaside delights.
Day Six: Farewell, St. John
As my trip neared its end, Gibney finally embraced us with its beauty. Snorkeling adventures, relaxing on the sand, and sharing laughter with new friends created a fitting crescendo to this journey. Each beach day was a reminder of the incredible natural beauty this island holds.
Day Seven: The Bittersweet Goodbye
The final day on the island is always bittersweet. The thought of returning to reality casts a shadow, yet the memories made during this trip will forever remain in my heart. From early morning coffees to memorable dinners, each experience etched a mark on my soul.
In Retrospect: A Journey of Rediscovery
As I sit here, typing away, I'm flooded with gratitude for the moments I experienced on this journey. St. John's landscapes, its warm embrace, and the connections made along the way have reignited my love for travel and adventure. It's a reminder that no matter how many times you visit a place, every trip brings something new to the table.
To those who are counting down the days until thier own St. John adventure, I assure you that the anticipation is worth every second. Cherish the memories, embrace the experiences, and let the island's magic wash over you.
